One way you can really upgrade the look of any room is by replacing your old supply vents also known as furnace registers. We often take them for granted but their importance in keeping our home comfortable is immeasurable. Making sure that they are in great working order so that air passes through them efficiently is very important. Not only that, but they can help enhance the look and aesthetic of your home.
Old Supply Vents
This is the original vent from a 1931 Tudor home. Not only is it unattractive but it lost its effectiveness years ago. The owner resorted to propping some of their vents open with a dime (yes the coin). Some were tied open with wire. Overall, not very functional and VERY unappealing to the eye. So the had us replace them.
Starting the Repair
In a lot of older homes, the vents are painted on. The older the home the more layers of paint. We carefully remove the old vent incurring as little damage as is possible to the surrounding plaster wall.
Repairing the Surrounding Wall
We then repair the surrounding wall ensuring that the opening is as close to the new vent’s size as is possible. Finishing up by sealing and encapsulating all the seams.
Finished Product
After some sanding and painting we install the new vent. Can you see the difference from the old one? Plus, the vent now works as it should allowing air to flow freely. The new vent is MUCH more efficient heating or cooling the room much easier. Most likely, saving energy and lowering your energy bills.
Best Time to Replace Your Heater Vent
A good time to replace your supply vent is in the spring or fall when your furnace and air conditioner is not in use. If the walls need repaired, you will have to paint around the new vent. So having paint that is an exact match is vital. It could be a good time to add a new coat of paint or a new color to your room to update it even more.
